Say hello to slate blue. A striking blend of grey and blue, the shade is having its moment in the spotlight.

Blue in general will always have a place in our homes, but the timelessness of slate blue is unmatched. It sits comfortably between warmth and coolness, creating a sense of relaxation. Its versatility is another reason we love the colour so much. In some spaces and lights, it is calming and cosy, whilst in others it looks striking and elegant. Wondering how you can incorporate slate blue into your next project? Take a look below…

Where Does Slate Blue Work Best?

Due to its gentler nature, slate blue fits in a range of spaces. It feels more at home in certain areas, though.

Cocoon Collection, Summer Renaissance Collection

Slate blue looks the part in south-facing spaces that receive plenty of natural light. This is down to its cooler undertones. It works well in living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. Although, the shade can also work in north-facing rooms. We would recommend pairing with warmer variations of blue, such as rich navy tones. Earthy colourways can warm up your palette too. Use texture, such as basket weaves and embroideries, for curtains and blinds. Finally, add visual warmth with rich patterns. Choose small-scale prints or ogee designs for your upholstery fabric.

Which Colours Should I Combine Slate Blue With?

Encompassing hints of grey and blue, it is both versatile and stylish.

(From Left to Right, Clockwise) Cocoon Collection, Lisbon Collection, Scandi Collection, Lisbon Collection, Snowdon Collection, Harris Collection, Savannah Collection

As a general rule of thumb, we would recommend balancing cool and warm tones in a space. Consider the colour’s undertones of blue when pairing with other hues, too. So, add in cornflower shades and powder blues for a calming, cosy feel. Use cobalt and navy tones for depth.  Add in earthier tones for an unexpected, contemporary twist. When choosing neutrals, use a mixture of off whites and dusky greys.

How Should I Present Slate Blue in My Own Home?

Soft yet confident, there are several ways you can use the shade.

Cocoon Collection, Summer Renaissance Collection

The calming nature of slate blue means it is suited to cosy soft furnishings. Think delicately embroidered curtains, charming scatter cushions, or cosy throws. Instead, create a focal point with a striking, tropical-inspired print. Create a cocooning space and use on an armchair or sofa. Choose a fabric such as a cloud effect velvet or dreamy jacquard.
